Dagoba has been selling their eclipse and new moon chocolate bars since at least 2005. (There are reviews on the web going back at least that far.) Hershey bought the company in 2006. The novels were published in 2006 and 2007.
Given that eclipse and new moon are dagoba's dark chocolates, and Stephenie Meyers also wanted to evoke darkness, I vote for coincidence. Even if it became a corporate tie-in, I would have thought the respective companies would have been less subtle about it.
The TM after the names, as well as the duplicate font, say it's no coincidence. I do wonder whether Yoda had a hand in making the chocolate, though, that would seem to be the original tie-in....
It would only be a product tie-in if R-Pattison's pasty face was plastered all over it. Gross.
Have seen the Harper Teen covers for Romeo and Juliette, Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice? Red flowers on black. How very stultifying. Way to capitalize on the mania, but really, did they have to use such horrible taglines?
"The original forbidden love"
"Love never dies"
And, last but not least, "The love that started it all".
And everyone thought Jane Austen was rolling in her grave because of Seth Grahame-Smith. ;) There can't be anything left of the poor thing by now.
Haha. I don't know if Eye Reads was thinking this exactly, but Star Wars and the Dagoba (or however it's actually spelled) System is the first thing I thought of when I saw this. Thanks INTERN. :-)
Tere - They do sell chocolate like that. Oh yummy http://www.robertpattinsonsite.com/twilight-chocolate.php. And have you seen the Wuthering Heights that says "Bella and Edward's favorite book"
They should have planted garlic plants in Dagoba. Have you seen this ridiculous clip. I can't believe this man (an elected official?!) actually said this about the vampires: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/06/city-councilman-argues-ag_n_413594.html
Godiva chocolate, Twilight-style, has taken over the previously charming shelves leading up to the Barnes & Noble counter. I literally have to look away.
prusik: You have solved the mystery and eased INTERN's mind...sort of! If it is indeed a coincidence, then the universe must be conspiring *by its own accord* to put subliminal twilight messages everywhere INTERN looks. Which is even freakier.
Anna: Why can't Godiva make chocolate of characters in Kafka instead? Cockroach chocolate = way more delicious than Edward chocolate.
Vampires... Star Wars... chocolate... wait, I've got some sort of string-theory-everything-in-the-universe-is-connected thing going on here. The REALLY worrying thing is that it's funneling through Twilight. Definitely a sign of impending Apocalypse: perhaps the 2012 people are right.
We sell the Godiva New Moon bar at Chapters in Canada as well - it has the flower on it, and costs $6.25 a bar. The best, absolute best piece of Twilight merchandise ever, though? Twilight band-aids. How much do I love the irony?
Oh man, I've been eating their Xocolatl bar for years and never realized this. Also, I am dismayed to learn that the parent company is Hershey- not because I feel organically betrayed or anything, but because I really don't like most of Hershey's products.
Is it bad that I'm actually stunned that Godiva made a Twilight chocolate bar? Or, more accurately, that I hadn't heard of it? I work for Godiva, as a sales associate in a boutique. I'm fairly certain none of my co-workers have heard of it either, since we rag on Twilight all the time.
Maybe I should start going to B&N instead of borders.
Well, you do know that Hershey is Dagoba's parent company, right? Just another corporate marketing tie-in...

ReplyDeleteWait...you're telling me that when you see organic chocolate, "bloodlust" and "undead" aren't the first two things that come to mind?
ReplyDeleteDo Star Wars nerds like Twilight?

Which came first the chocolate bar or the book?
ReplyDeleteGrimmster24 indeed! The first time I saw that chocolate at a food coop I turned to my friend and said isn't that where Yoda lives?
ReplyDeleteGodiva also has twilight themed chocolate.
Oh to write a book so compelling that I got my own chocolate named after it....
ReplyDeleteOh that's awful...

Look at that font. It's not coincidence.
ReplyDeleteI, for one, can't wait to sell my writerly soul for the sweet, sweet milk (chocolate) of corporate tie-ins!
ReplyDeleteAs for the disturbing sweets above, I am Team Dr. Radcliffe "Father of Curses" Emerson Chocolate Bar. Edward be damned - I need a real man!

ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of "New Moon"s around that I have to presume have no corollation. Elliot Smith's album title, for instance.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but I can't make an educated comment until I taste them both.
ReplyDeleteLOL
I thought of Star Wars & Yoda, too! The Twilight thing didn't even hit me until I read everyone's comments.
:)
